About the Owner - David A.
Basurto
From the early 1980’s to the early 1990’s
David Basurto worked in the housing and heavy construction fields. He began in
his construction career as a laborer and advanced to lead carpenter on
projects ranging from a $50,000 home to a $15 million road project.
It was in 1992 that David graduated with an
Associate of Arts Degree in Drafting/Computer Aided Design from ITT Technical
Institute in Tucson, Arizona and embarked on a new career.
David was employed right out of school as the CAD Department Supervisor with Vision Homes. While there, David designed
and drafted twelve new home models that resulted in 75 new home constructions.
He effectively worked with engineers and county officials in the design of
several custom homes by solving structural problems and troubleshooting
inconsistencies.
When Vision Homes closed its doors for good in
1993 David established the area’s most creative and responsive Cad drafting
service. David successfully generated business and friendships with
architects, building contractors, and home owner/builders. Client satisfaction
resulted in strong revenues through repeat business and word of mouth. With
the good fortune of the new business David was able to move to where he and
his family could enjoy the forested beauty of the Pacific Northwest.
David’s prayers were answered
when a now good friend took a chance and hired him over the phone, sight
unseen and based upon only his credentials. In September of 1994, David
started with KPFF Consulting Engineers, the largest structural engineering
firm in Portland . As a project drafter, David provided full sets of
structural drawings for clients, meeting deadlines, client conditions and
standards. David was the project drafter on many projects, including:
the award winning Doernbecher
Children’s Hospital in Portland, Or., the Portland International Airport
Expansion Project, Pioneer Courthouse, EFK Medical Office Building, Columbia
Sportswear Company Flagship Store, Niketown Buildings E, F, and A, and the
Willakenzie Winery.
In January of 1997, Degenkolb
Engineers opened offices in Portland. David started as a Sr. CAD Specialist
with Degenkolb in February of 1997. As a Sr. CAD Specialist, David’s duties
included: providing on time, on budget drafting services for Degenkolb
clients, providing structural drawings from schematic design to construction
documents for projects such as Hewlett Packard, Corvallis Site Seismic
Upgrade, St. Johns Medical Center Long View, Safeway Pilanii Village Hawaii,
Portland Fire Stations, Multnomah Co. Libraries, Oregon Dept. Forestry and
many more.
By the end of David’s stay
with Degenkolb Engineers, David was a CAD Group Leader who’s
responsibilities included, managing workloads in the Portland office,
assigning projects to CAD specialists, CAD personnel training, development and
implementation of CAD standards, testing, implementing and upgrading of
software, providing drafting estimations for proposals and budgets, budgeting,
supplying, and maintaining all equipment in the drafting department.
A parallel role for David at
this time was that of CAD Coordinator. By now there were three more cities in
the Degenkolb family, Oakland, Ca. Salt Lake City, Nevada and San Diego, Ca.
As CAD Coordinator David’s duties included, creating and maintaining a fully
customized structural AutoCAD R14 menu, collecting drafting demands and
deadlines from Portland, San Francisco, Oakland, Los Angeles and Salt Lake
City offices and managing the workload to the offices able to complete the
work through faxing, Fed-Ex, and scanning.
One of David’s greatest
achievements while at Degenkolb Engineers was serving a two-year term on the
Board of Directors.
David is a careful and creative drafter with a
combined drafting experience of over ten years, 16,000 hours of AutoCAD, and
over twelve years experience in construction. He has excellent judgment in
making plans "buildable." David is a proven team player and
leader with a history of saving costs and consistently meeting
deadlines and a proven ability to manage work throughout five
offices in five different cities.
